Answers to the quesitons we get commonly asked!

Why do I need a licensed electrician?

We’ve all seen the jumble of wires that run along the inside of walls and behind skirting boards. Would you really trust yourself to jump in and start patching, cutting and removing wires? Reading an Internet guide on how to keep the green wire separate from the yellow wire doesn’t make you an expert.

Incorrect wiring done by an unlicensed and uninsured person can void your insurance, so when the inevitable electrical fire happens you’ll find yourself with huge repair bills.

That’s why only trained and experienced electricians should perform electrical work. Paying for a licensed electrician ultimately saves you time, effort and money, and ensures you and your house are safe. Quality work lasts and gives you the peace of mind that a professional job has been done.

What areas do you service?

We service Newcastle, Lake Macquaire, Central Coast & Hunter Valley.

Are you insured?

Yes the team at KV Electrical are fully licensed and insured! Electrical license no: 338230C

Are you a qualified rewiring Electrician?

We have been rewiring houses around Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast & Hunter Valley for many years now, and have the expertise to do any house to a high and safe standard.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

If you find black colored cables entering the consumer unit, this is an immediate sign that the wiring needs replacing, it has been installed in the 50s and inadequate for today’s use.

Modern electrical cables are manufactured in white thermo plastic sheathing and are insulated by a coating of TPS, this cabling also has red for (live), black (neutral) and most importantly green/yellow for earthing. The old black cables were insulated with rubber, which perishes and decays with age. You will also find there will be no earth present with this type of VIR (Vulcanised Indian Rubber).

How does an electrical safety switch save lives?

An Electrical safety switch is what we call at KV Electrical as a – “Electrocution protection device.”

On a normal power circuit, the current flowing to an appliance returns through the neutral wire. If the circuit is compromised, the electricity can leak to earth through a person in contact with the appliance, causing death or serious injury.

A safety switch detects the loss of power from the circuit, and cuts the supply of electricity in as little as 30 milliseconds – 0.003 seconds. Importantly, this response time is faster than the critical section of a heartbeat, and therefore significantly reduces the risk of death or serious injury.

What is a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider?

A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) is an electrician authorised to work on the electrical network between your property and the street. This includes connecting, disconnecting, and upgrading power supply across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast & Hunter Valley.

When do I need a Level 2 Electrician?

You’ll need a Level 2 electrician when you’re upgrading your switchboard, connecting a new build to the grid, replacing a private pole, or resolving an Ausgrid defect. We’re licensed to carry out this work safely and compliantly.

What's the difference between Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 electrical work?

At KV Electrical we specialise in Level 1 & Level 2 electrical services throughout Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Central Coast & Hunter Valley. Here’s the difference;

  • Level 1: Construction of electricity distribution network assets (“poles and wires” or underground)
  • Level 2: Construction or change of service lines between the electricity distribution network and the point of connection of the property/premises and for energising new or altered connections
  • Level 3: Design of electricity distribution network assets underground or overhead.

Can you upgrade my home from single-phase to 3-phase power?

Yes — we handle full single to 3-phase upgrades. This is common for homes adding large appliances or machinery. Our Level 2 electricians ensure safe, future-ready power supply that complies with all local standards.

Do you work with both overhead and underground connections?

Absolutely. We provide both overhead and underground electrical services depending on your site requirements. Our team will recommend the safest, most efficient option for your property.

What's involved in clearing an Ausgrid defect notice?

We inspect the defect, carry out the required repairs or replacements, and liaise with Ausgrid to confirm compliance. Our Level 2 Accredited electricians ensure your site is made safe and reconnected quickly.

How quickly can you respond to emergency Level 2 work?

We offer prompt response times for urgent Level 2 electrical issues, such as storm damage, fallen lines, or failed connections. Based in the Hunter Valley, we service the wider Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Central Coast areas with minimal delay.

When should I have an electrical safety check?

  • You are purchasing a property that has been occupied
  • The property is more that 25 years old
  • If it is more that 5 years since one has been done
  • If you are concerned about how any of the equipment may have been installed
